Michael Bay discussing the Transformers franchise |
With shooting due to commence in May and a release date set of June 27 2014, Forbes magazine recently caught up with Transformers director Michael Bay to discuss the next movie in the series Tranformers 4 and what we should expect.
"We're going to start off smaller. There's a brand new cast. To freshen the franchise, we've redesigned everything from top to bottom." Said Bay. "The history of the first three movies is still there, we start four years later and there's a reason why we're meeting a new cast."
The new cast is led by (Marky) Mark Wahlberg and newcomer Jack Reynor, in a bid to start a new set of Transformers films, although when questioned as to whether or not this would be a reboot, Bay was adamant that this would be a continuation, albeit with a new, fresher take.
"We keep the Transformers the way they were. It's just four years later. There's a reason the Transformers are redesigned. We're trying to broaden the franchise and give it more places to go."
Bay had previously stated that the third film in the series Transformers: Dark of the moon was to be his last, coincidentally it was also the biggest movie of Bay's career, grossing about $1.1 billion, but the temptation was too much.
"Paramount was letting me do Pain & Gain and the Transformers ride was opening at Universal and it was bittersweet to think of passing it off. I wanted to set it up on a really sure footing and to bring someone else in on that, it would have been overwhelming."
Needless to say, out of the previous entries only the first movie really received any critical success, the second movie being widely recognised as the worst of the three. It's encouraging that even with the huge box office success of the last movie, the next films will be taking a new approach, and with a new cast behind the picture its possible that this could be another "Avengers" success story and be the Transformers movie that we have all been waiting for. Only one year until we find out.
