Downey Jr. talks future of Iron Man

It doesn't matter who you are, Robert Downey Jr. IS Iron Man, but does the actor see a future in the role?

Tony Stark is coming back to screens with Iron Man 3 due in May of this year, as well as another appearance set for The Avengers 2, but how much longer will we see Robert Downey Jr. play the iconic character that he was made to play?

Kevin Fiege and Robert Downey Jr.
The award winning actor has been known to be unfriendly to a movies budget, Marvel reportedly had to pay out upwards of $50 million to Downey Jr. for The Avengers and his Iron Man contract is rumoured to be over as of this May. Kevin Fiege, Marvel CEO talked about the possibility of replacing Tony Stark back in April last year;

"I hope Downey makes a lot of movies for us as Stark. If and when he doesn't, and I'm still here making these movies, we don't take him to Afghanistan and have him wounded again. I think we James Bond it."

So at Marvels end, if Downey Jr. does leave the franchise, they will give the character the Hulk treatment, carrying on from the previous films but replacing the actor, it's hard to believe they could find anyone more suited to play Stark, but they did pull it off with Mark Ruffalo so who knows? Every time a Bond leaves the series we feel like nobody could replace the previous, and yet here we are with Daniel Craig and Skyfall becoming the 7th highest grossing movie of all time.

Empire managed to talk with Robert Downey Jr. recently on his future in the role.

"Let's just say that the only thing I ever let go of had claw marks in it. There's a little bit of soul reclamation going on. I feel that the first time I played Tony, I did it best. Sorry! The affinity with Tony now is: how do you sustain something? I'm not stupid, I like to play ball, I love the company, I love the character, and the business side of things, I'm not picky about that either."

Empire also asked the actor how he would feel about being replaced for Tony, and leaving the franchise behind.

"It would probably be the best thing in the world for me. You know, ego... but sometimes ego just has to be smashed. Let's see what happens. I take the audience very seriously - I feel bad when I see folks doing movies and the audience is like, 'Don't do that anymore.' I don't have to overstay my welcome..."

So there will come a day when Downey Jr. feels like he's done all he can with the character, and not wanting to stay on in denial he will bow out of the role. But let's hope he has another batch of movies in him yet.
