Edgar Wright's Ant-Man: The story so far

Director of the project Edgar Wright
With the Ant-Man movie finally getting a confirmed release date, the Done Did It team has compiled everything you need to know to bring you back up to speed on the project

Edgar Wright (Scott Pilgrim, Hot fuzz) is planning to direct an action film for Marvel Studios, set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The movie will cover both the story of the original 1960's Ant-Man, Henry Pym, and the story of his modern day successor Scott Lang. Wright is insisting that the film will not be a spoof or out-right comedy movie, but it will be containing some of Wright's iconic humour.

.... Yes, we know. We have known for over 5 years. Why is this relevant now?You may have read some articles here or there, or even heard a comment or rumour this way or that, but what the hell is happening with the Ant-Man movie? The Avengers has come and gone, and with a sequel coming up in 2015, you can't help but wonder what the story is with one of the original Avengers. We know that the project has at least been discussed as far back as 2006, but the iconic Marvel superhero is no where to be seen. Here's the time line of the project so far, to bring you back up to speed.

February 2007, Wright announced that the project was being slightly held up while the script was revised, and casting had not yet started. Wright went on to explain that more news would be available within a few months, and that he had been researching nanotechnology for the film.

March 2008, Wright spoke to Empire magazine about the project, stating that the second draft of the script was being written at the time. He also made a point that the film would not be an outright comedy, but it would be "more of a full-on action adventure sci-fi film, but with a comedic element".

February 2010, Edgar Wright and Stan Lee discussed the project over lunch, where Stan Lee tweeted the meeting, "To make up for my previous grievous error, here's a little item that may have escaped you. Marvel is prepping a movie starring - -Ant-Man! I had lunch with the cool, young director Edgar Wright and as you'd imagine we had fun discussing the tiny hero."
Wright then explained the delays so far in an interview with MTV News. "Because the character isn't one of their biggest properties, it's not like a tent pole deadline. It's more like me and Kevin Feige (President of Marvel Studios) saying 'Let's make a really good script' We've always agreed on that - 'Let's make a good script that works, that's all about a great genre film, and that isn't necessarily relying on anything else."

August 2010, Wright then confirmed that his script is an origin story, and that it doesn't work for Marvel's chronology to include Ant-Man in The Avengers.

January 2011, Wright announced that he was working on the script once again, and during a Q and A at SXSW, Wright and co-writer Joe Cornish stated that they had been re-writing the script.

April 2011, during Kapow-Con, Cornish announced that him and Wright had delivered the finished second draft to the studio.

July 2011, Wright and Cornish deliver a third draft to Marvel Studios, along with concept art, and sources say that the project is now green lit.

May 2012, Wright presented a "teaser" image of the movie over Twitter, and Feige states that the movie is "as close as it's ever been".

June 2012, test footage for the movie is directed by Wright and rumors arise that Wright will be directing a post-credits scene for Iron Man 3 where Ant-Man confronts Chen Lu.

July 2012, Wright appeared at San Diego Comic-Con to confirm that Ant-Man is his next project, revealing the test footage that he prepared earlier in the year. Simon Pegg, close friend to Edgar Wright announced on his twitter that Wright would be shooting Ant-Man in 2013.
The test footage cannot be seen on line as it is owned by Comic-Con, but you can see the Panel where they discuss it below.

October 2012, Marvel and Disney announce that Ant-Man would hit theatres on November 6, 2015, after the release of The Avengers 2.

January 2013, Kevin Feige confirmed that the movie would start "Phase Three" of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with Phase Two finishing on The Avengers 2.

Now in February of 2013, Edgar Wright has discussed the project and its delays in an interview with IGN.

"I've been collaborating with Kevin (Feige) during the whole of that cycle. I think people have always assumed..'Oh why is it taking so long to make?' Part of it is because I wanted to make two other movies first. I wanted to make World's End.. me and Simon (Pegg) were very keen to make it and it felt like it was unfinished business and we wanted to wrap up the trilogy."

Wright admits though, that the longer time frame has, if anything, helped the film.

"But to be honest, the later I do it, it feels like I could learn more, especially about special effects. It's a big effects movie, so I'm pleased to go into it having done Scott Pilgrim and The World's End because you're always learning more about that side."

Now that The World's End is wrapping up, there should be no reason why this project can't move forward. If all of Edgar Wrights teases and talks can be trusted, this movie should be an absolute gem. Knowing Wrights directing, this will be an utterly unique Marvel movie.
"It's a way of doing a superhero film within another genre, I wanted to tell an origin tale in a slightly different way. It's part of the Marvel cinematic universe, but it also feels like its own piece."

Hopefully there's only two more years to go!... Hopefully...
