Joss Whedon raises his S.H.I.E.L.D.

Joss Whedon discusses the latest news on his in-development show S.H.I.E.L.D

"I'm excited about the show because it's a very hopeful show. It's not about murder, and it's not about crime, and it's not people looking into their own belly buttons." Joss Whedon told TVLine in a recent interview. The veteran show runner most known for his work on such cult series as Dark Angel, Buffy, Firefly and now more recently Marvels 2012 smash hit The Avengers, has been working on bringing the Marvel Cinematic Universe to small screens on ABC via the spin-off show S.H.I.E.L.D.

The Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement and Logistics Division is an espionage and law-enforcement agency, based within the Marvel universe, that supports Marvel heroes and helps deal with villainous threat. The agency has been touched on across the many Marvel movies, most prominently in Marvels: The Avengers in 2012, but we haven't seen much of the agency as of yet.

Marvel were looking to make a live-action TV series, much in the same vein as Smallville and Lost, back as far as 2010, and as of July 2012 they had planned to go ahead with a series within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, maintaining the continuity of the movies already in it. As of August 2012, after the success of The Avengers, it was announced that Joss Whedon would be writing a script for a TV show S.H.I.E.L.D. and that the show would be autonomous from the Marvel movies, Whedon at the time stating  "It’s gotta be a show that works for people who haven’t seen the Marvel movies. It will please Marvel fans, I think."

Towards the end of 2012, a casting sheet was released and over the last few months the series recurring characters have been set, including the return of the presumed deceased during The Avengers Agent Coulson, with actor Clark Gregg reprising his role from the movie.

Questions have been raised as to whether or not we would be seeing fellow agent of Coulsons, Maria Hill, played by actress Cobie Smoulders, but at this stage she is not listed as a recurring member due to scheduling conflicts. Whedon confirmed that they would write her into the show as her time permits, with her working on the final season of How I Met Your Mother.

Shooting of the pilot wrapped up last week, and the show will hopefully be fast-tracked for a premiere by the end of the year. Whedon is making it clear that this show will not be focusing on the superheroes as such, but more the "under-dogs" of the universe, the "peripheral people" but not limiting it to that.
"Right now, I want to involve people in the characters that we've created for the show, and then we'll worry about the other stuff."
