Thief 4 details teased by Game Informer

Thi4f images teased and due date hinted at, Game Informer to show more details in April Issue

It's been all quiet on the European front since Thief 4 was  announced back in 2009, but Game Informer has teased some new artwork and a due date for the upcoming reboot thanks to a feature article they will be running in their April issue.

Developer Square-Enix has issued a press release about the game, which they are working on with Eidos Montreal, calling it "a reinvention of a franchise that helped define an entire genre of games". It talks the game up to be a first-person adventure, with intelligent design that allows players to have full control, with the freedom to choose their own path through the game, and how they approach and overcome each challenge.

"We're handling a precious gemstone with Thief. Fans remember the original games very fondly and we want to preserve that essence which we have excellent experience of doing at Eidos Montreal, whilst also introducing Thief to a brand new, next-generation, audience," Stephane D'Astous said in a recent interview, General Manager at Eidos Montreal. "Our goal is to deliver the fantasy of being Garrett, the master thief, and we're building this game around that core experience."

We've seen Eidos Montreal do great things already, with their work on the Deus Ex reboot, as well as working on the multiplayer of the latest Tomb Raider, so it's easy to believe that they can pull it off a third time with Thief.

Unfortunately, it is difficult to ignore the similarities in this reboot and one of last years breakthrough new IPs, Dishonoured. As a big fan of the original Thief games, that was one of the main reasons that I loved Dishonoured so much. It was a current generation Thief title, depending on how you played it of course. The stealth aspect, the freedom and choice in your actions, and even the freedom in how you moved within the level, all screamed Thief. The plots of both games are also hauntingly similar, according to the upcoming issue of Game Informer the plot will be as follows:

"Garrett is back in action in a Gothic industrial metropolis, stealing everything that's not nailed down, and will also very likely find himself eventually, and unwillingly, drawn into the religious and political intrigues of the City, which has fallen under the rule of a tyrant known as the Baron and also happens to be suffering the ravages of a plague."

Game Informer has also revealed that the game is due out in 2014, on the PS4 and "other next gen consoles", so hopefully the space between it and Dishonoured will be enough of a buffer  to avoid any claims or feelings of imitation. More information will be known in April with the next Game Informer issue.
